Man. I still can not believe how fast this weekend went. My weekend started on Wednesday since my sister ended up driving me to Greyhound on Thursday morning. I was weary about taking Greyhound over the boarder since I’ve drove the past two years (but with the ex). I haven’t took Greyhound since the early 00’s. I couldn’t beat the $74 bucks round trip though.
The ride to Canada went smoothly, but man it was LONG. TFCon has became a tradition with ffdemon and I to meet up there since it’s about half-way for both of us. I didn’t get into Toronto until 5:30. ffdemon & her boyfriend were kind enough to pick me up on Thursday night from the Greyhound station. With all the traffic on Thursday night, we didn’t get back to the hotel until near 7. We then decide to head to Square One for some dinner at Chipotle and do a Wal-Mart run for the evening. Before the con started on Friday, we decided to hit up Transformers: Age of Extinction at Cineplex (in true IMAX). This was my third time viewing it, but man, I still love this movie.
We ended up waiting in line for reg for a little over an hour and a half. There was absolutely not much to do on Friday, so we decided to retreat up to our rooms. We did pop down again for opening ceremonies (but that was a waist since we didn’t stay for the charity auction). We ended Friday with drinking and watching Pacific Rim.
Saturday we got up pretty early since the dealer’s room opened at 9. I wasn’t looking for much this year since I haven’t collected much since before Prime’s toy line (and I hate the Beast Hunters stuff). We ended up getting done with both autographs (I only got Garry Chalk’s) and the dealer’s room under 45 minutes this year. I did pick up two keybots from plushology and an WeeFormer Iron Hide from sowiddlefur. I absolutely adore these two girls especially for their enthusiasm for making Transformers plushies. (It makes me want to sit down and coming up with my own pattern.)
There were not a whole lot of panels that I wanted to sit through on Saturday. I should of gone to the couple of Q & A’s, but I wasn’t really impressed by the guest list this year. After my roommates got back from them, we decided to head over to Playdium to play some putt putt golf to kill some time before another panel. The script reading was great. It’s probably one of my favorite events.
We ended up asking the hotel this year for recommended sushi places. We spent a little more then we wanted to, but we ended at J.J.’s. It’s an all-you-can-eat (without the buffet) place. I’ve never seen such things. It was Saturday night dinner too, which I’m sure we factored in the price that way. 95% of the food we tried was really delicious. The only thing I couldn’t eat was the salmon pizza. I think it was the texture. Most of Saturday night, we ended up playing Card Against Humanities (while drinking).
Sunday we woke up a bit early to check out the dealer’s room one more time. Usually, there’s a bit more variety on Sunday but we didn’t find much of a difference this year. We decided to hit up Square One one more time to kill some time (and to take my Canadian friends to their first Hot Topic). I told my self I wasn’t going to buy any t-shirts, but I ended up with 2 at Hot Topic (including a Bumblebee t-shirt for $3.12). I ended up getting some bubble tea as well in the mall.
For dinner, we ended up going to Lazeez Shawarma. We’ve discovered this little gem last year at TFCon. It’s kind of became a tradition to eat shawarma at least once during a con. I’ve never seen the place so busy though. It seemed like Sunday night was the time to buy shawarma.
Monday. Man… what a LONG day. I said my goodbyes to ffdemon at Greyhound. Things were going smoothly until we got to St. Catherine’s stop. This woman tried to get on the bus with her son with unpacked luggage (and too much that wasn’t in luggage). Secondly, she kept arguing with the bus driver and he comes to find that she didn’t have a passport. Oh boy. I think we ended up a half an hour at least late on that one.
Then when we got to the boarder, there were no officers to check us in. We waited at customs for nearly two hours. TWO HOURS. It was taking forever too once we got going on the whole customs thing. I was happy and very, very lucky that my second bus didn’t leave out of Buffalo until 6:50 that night. We didn’t get to the Buffalo station until 4:45 pm. It should of got in at 3:50 pm.
I didn’t get back into downtown Cleveland until 10:40 pm. I go home around 11 last night. And man, I can tell you that I can that I’m happy I have the next two days off to recover. As much as I love TFCon, I just felt like it was missing something this year. It felt like they put all their concentration onto their new convention, TFCon USA. I’m kind of glad that we’ve decided to look into Fan Expo next year. I do know for sure that I will miss ffdemon greatly. I won’t get to see her until NYCC!
